23 Tamils arrested over East Chief Secretary's killing

Twenty-three Tamils have been taken into custody so far by the police in connection with the killing of East Provincial Chief Secretary Mr.H.M.Herat Abeyeweera. Twelve of them, including three women, were employees at the East Provincial Secretariat located along Inner Harbour Road in Trincomalee town, sources in east port town said.

Mr.Abeyeweera was shot dead by an unidentified man while in his office, Monday evening. The driver of his official vehicle and two office aides were also taken into custody soon after the murder.

Meanwhile the funeral of the slain Chief Secretary is to be held in Kandy on Thursday.

Top officials working in the provincial council offices located in Trincomalee have sought protection, police sources said.
