SLA denies access to Muslim cultivators' farmland

[TamilNet, Saturday, 01 September 2007, 12:20 GMT]
Hundreds of predominantly Muslim farmers in Kinniya division in Trincomalee district are blocked from cultivating nearly four thousand hectares of paddy fields lying in Theeneri and Ka'ndalkaadu after these areas came under the control of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) following recent military operation, civil society sources said.

Trincomalee District Muslim Peace Council (TDMPC) has appealed to the SLA to allow paddy cultivation in these lands.

The said farmers are badly affected economically and their situation is likely to worsen if the restrictions are not lifted soon, civil society sources said.
