Jaffna residents face long-term power cut[TamilNet, Sunday, 30 December 2007, 11:38 GMT]Electricity to Jaffna peninsula supplied by the private firm Agrico through Sri Lanka Electricity Board (SLEB) may stop completely or be affected seriously as the contract of Agrico terminates Monday. The Chinese firm Euro Asia which was to take over the electricity supply from January has advanced no preparatory work to takeover the responsibility, SLEB sources in Jaffna said. Agrico has been supplying 15 megawatt electricity from Chu’nnaakam to Jaffna peninsula with a daily power cut of one hour. With the new supplier Euro Asia, the Chinese firm, not setup to resume generation of electricity Jaffna residents may not have electriciyt supply until March. Request has been made to Agrico to continue electricity supply for three more months but no positive response has come forth until now, according to sources in Jaffna.
