Acceptance of nominations for elections in nine local authorities in Batticaloa district will begin Friday 18 January and continue till noon 25 January, T.Krishnananthalingam, Assistant commissioner of elections, Batticaloa district said.

The nine local councils in which elections are to be held are Batticaloa Municipal Council, Pradesiya Sabah of Eravoorpattu, Koralaipattu, Koralaipattu North, Eruvilpattu, Manmunaipattu West, Manmunai Southwest, Porativupattu, and Manmunai South.

Twelve independent groups have already paid election deposits till Thursday, T.Krishnananthalingam said.

Elections Department sources said that the election would be held during the second week of March.

Earlier, Sri Lanka's Commissioner of Elections rejected the appeal made by the political parties to postpone the elections to nine local authorities in Batticaloa district as the current ground situation is not conducive for holding such polls in a peaceful atmosphere.

However, the commissioner said that he would hold consultation with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to strengthen the security in the Batticaloa district during election period and to provide adequate security to candidates contesting the elections.
