Power cut extended in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 11 March 2008, 16:50 GMT]
Sri Lanka Electricity Board (SLEB) Jaffna branch announced Tuesday an increase of the existing one hour power cut by 15 minutes due to reduction of electricity supply to Chunnaakam SLEB by Cool Air from Kaangkeasanththu’rai (KKS) from Tuesday. The cuts do not apply to the High Security Zones (HSZ) of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in the peninsula, the announcement said.

The peninsula is divided into two supply areas, and a one hour power cut is imposed daily, alternating between the two areas during the peak hours of 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m daily. The duration has now been increased to 75 minutes.

On Tuesday, several areas in Jaffna peninsula experienced power cuts which lasted for more than the announced duration.

SLEB, located in Chunnaakam, supplies electricity from its generators to the entire peninsula in addition to the electricity supply purchased from the private company Cool Air located at KKS.

Cool Air’s production of electricity is affected by a lack of spares to their generators, sources close to SLEB Jaffna said.
