Gunman shoots dead policeman in Mannaar

A gunman shot and killed a policeman of a special roaming patrol team of Mannaar Police at Periyakamam near the meteorological observation station on Mannaar Thalaimannaar road Sunday around 7:00 a.m., Police said.

The killed policeman was identified as S. Veerasinghe, 39.

Police launched a cordon and search operation in the area and all passengers traveling on buses and other vehicles were checked. A 21-year-old passenger Selvarasa Suvendran from Kaaddaaspaththiri in Peasaalai was detained by the police on suspicion.

Mannaar District Magistrate T.J. Prabhakaran inspected the dead body of the policeman at 10:30 a.m., and ordered a postmortem.
