Police patrol ambushed

A military trained Policeman was killed and two were wounded when the Liberation Tigers set off a claymore mine at Vammiyadi in the heart of the Eravur town, 16 kilometers north of Batticaloa, on the main road this morning around 8.15 a.m.

The Policeman were part of a patrol that was clearing the road near the main checkpoint in the town.

Sources said that the Tigers had also fired on the patrol.

Vammiyadi is a well defended area on the main road between the contiguous towns of Chenkalady and Eravur.

It is patrolled by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA), Police and the Tamil paramilitary groups TELO and PLOTE. Everyone, however, withdraw into their camps at night.
