Buddhist organisations demand eviction

[TamilNet, Saturday, 02 January 1999, 14:37 GMT]
A demonstration and a public meeting has been organised by two Buddhist organisations to demand the eviction of the Muslim villagers of Aaleemsenai in the eastern Amparai district. On December 28, the Sri Lankan Police had already ordered the residents of the village to vacate.

The protest has been organised by the Budhist Congress in the Ampara District and Digamadulle Budhist Youth Organisation.

The meeting will be held at the Ampara Town Council hall.

The Sinhala organisations claim that Aaleemsenai belongs to the Theehavabi settlement. They have also condemned the Sri Lankan Archaeological department for not having one any 'real' research in the area.

They said a statue of Buddha was discovered recently there.
