SLA trooper shot, injured in Akkaraipattu

Unidentified gunmen opened fire Monday around 7:20 p.m. on a road patrol unit of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) near the Clock Tower on Chaakama Veethi in Akkaraipattu police division in Ampaa’rai district, seriously injuring a soldier, sources in Akkaraipattu said. SLA launched a cordon and search operation immediately after the attack.

The seriously injured soldier is Lance Corporal M. Herath, 31.

Herath was first rushed to Akkaraipattu Base Hospital and then transferred to Ampaa’rai hospital for further treatment.

A T56 assault rifle was used in the shooting of the soldier, Akkaraipattu hospital sources said.
