The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is to wind up its development and reconstruction activities in Trincomalee district on the completion of its five year plan. The office of the USAID in Trincomalee town will be closed down Friday. USAID had opened Trincomalee office to carry out its five year development plan in the Trincomalee district in the year 2003, USAID sources in Colombo said.

USAID has implemented 196 projects such as reconstruction of bus stands, playgrounds and markets in the district which had been damaged by tsunami and also due to ongoing conflict.

USAID also implemented several livelihood activity projects for people affected by tsunami and war.

About 7.5 million US Dollars have been spent on these projects, USAID sources said.

The last act of the USAID in the district was to hand over the reconstructed modern central bus stand and shopping complex at an estimated cost of 500 million rupees in Trincomalee town to the Trincomalee Urban Council on Monday.
