Mankulam shelling kills 3

[TamilNet, Saturday, 16 January 1999, 19:56 GMT]
Three soldiers were killed and twelve were wounded when the Liberation Tigers fired mortars on Sri Lankan (SLA) positions at Mankulam this morning said army sources in Vavuniya this afternoon.

Meanwhile the Voice of Tigers (VoT) said in its night news broadcast today that a Tiger called Thamilini (Velayutham Thevanayaki of Batticaloa) was killed in a surprise confrontation with the SLA at Mankulam.

The radio said that another Tiger, Paarthipan (Perinparaasa of Amparai), was killed in a firefight with the army yesterday at Mankulam and that another Tiger, Krishna (Mahalingam Baskaran of Batticaloa), who was wounded in that engagement succumbed to his wounds today.

The SLA, according to the VoT, had yesterday ambushed a Tiger, Manimullai (Kopalakrishnan Sivamalar of Jaffna) at Moonrumurippu, killing her in the firefight that ensued.
