Abductions escalate in East

Unidentified armed men arriving in a white van Wednesday around 9:30 a.m. at the Ullai ICCA Non-government Organization abducted the security officer on duty, in Poththuvil police division in Ampaa'rai district, according to a complaint made by the victim's wife to Poththuvil police. In Trincomalee, a Tamil youth was abducted Thursday night at Uppuve'li suburb of the city. There have been several reports of abductions in the Sri Lankan military controlled East during the recent days.

The abducted security officer in Ampaa'rai is Uruthiramoorthy Selvakumar, 28, the father of one and a resident of Vinaayakapuram, Ku'richchi 1.

The youth reported missing in Uppuve'li is T. Kandeepan, 25, according to complaints lodged with Uppuve'li police. Armed persons arrived in three wheeler abducted Mr. Kandeepan. The Uppuveli Police began investigation into the complaint and recorded statements from neighbors of the victim's house. Tamil residents of the area are living in fear following the abduction, civil sources said.
