The seriously injured person was identified as Thirumal Sivanesan, 26, a body guard of Seelan, the personal secretary of Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, the chief minister of Eastern Province. Sivanesan has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Batticaloa Teaching Hospital. This shooting has taken place close to a police sentry post as Pillayan paramilitary group is expected to lay down their weapons before 22 February.
