Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched large scale cordon and search operations in areas in Vadamaraadchi, Thenmaraadchi and Valikaamam in Jaffna peninsula from Sunday early morning till evening, sources in Jaffna said. Warned by its Intelligence Wing of infiltration into the peninsula by Liberation Tigers, SLA has stepped up cordon and searches besides strengthening its security arrangements throughout the peninsula, the sources added.

SLA soldiers brought from various bases were deployed in large numbers in the above search operations.

Valveddi, Uduppiddi and Naavaladi areas in Vadamaraaadchi, Manthuvil and Vara’ni areas in Thenmaraadchi besides areas in Valikaamam were searched intensively by SLA soldiers Sunday.

These cordon and search operations of the SLA are being stepped up in the last few days after a considerable period of lull, the sources added.

Though there are independent reports of persons being arrested in the searches, they remain unconfirmed.
