A 19 year old youth, Subramaniam Sureshkumar, was abducted by unidentified armed men, while he was at the canteen run by the Tellipallai Multi-purpose co-operative society (MPCS) in the Jaffna peninsula.

Sources said the youth had handed over his national and army identity cards to armed men.

The parents of the boy had gone to the Sri Lankan Army camp at Kankesanthurai and complained about the abduction.

However, the SLA authorities have told the parents that they did not arrest the youth.

Meanwhile the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna has received complaints from the parents and relatives of three youth arrested and detained by the SLA.

Two of them, Rajalingam Ilangovan,19, of Periyapulam Chunnakam and Thirunavukkarasu Kumaradasan 19, of Kokkuvil, are students.

The third is, Rasathurai Jeniferharan,24 of Araaly in Vaddukkoddai.

The Human Rights Commission office in Jaffna is making inquiries, sources said.

Elsewhere in Jaffna three youths were arrested by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) at the Kalatti sentry point while on their way to Aanaiakottai on Friday. Two of these were released after interrogation.

The third, Nesaiah Jeyasuthan,19 is being detained by the army.
