Asoka de Silva, Sri Lanka’s new Chief Justice

Asoka de Silva was sworn in Monday morning as the new Chief Justice of Sri Lanka by the Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse at the Presidential Secretariat. Mr Silva is the thirty second Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. Sarath Nanda Silva retired from the post of Chief Justice Friday after eleven years.

Asoka de Silva studied in Kandy St. Antony’s College. He passed out as a lawyer in 1972 and entered a legal profession. Later he joined the Attorney General’s department as State Counsel and rose to the position of a Deputy Solicitor General.

In 1995 he was made president of the Sri Lanka‘s Court of Appeal and then a Supreme Court Judge.

He also functioned as a judge of the UN War Crime Tribunal, legal sources said.
