Fire damages Maantheevu leprosy hospital in Batticaloa

A major fire broke out at the leprosy hospital in Maanthivu Island in Batticaloa district around 6:00 a.m. in the morning of Tuesday. All thirteen patients warded in the hospital and employees were immediately evacuated in boats and helicopters by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

All thirteen patients warded in the hospital and employees were immediately evacuated in boats and helicopters by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF). Troops of the Sri Lanka Army spotted the fire and informed the SLAF. Helicopters were deployed to bring the fire under control, SLAF spokesman wing commander Janaka Nanayakkara told media.
