[TamilNet, Monday, 19 October 2009, 07:40 GMT]
A mine in Jaffna lagoon in Kaakkaitheevu exploded Sunday seriously injuring a fisherman fishing in Kannatheevu, a place where Sri Lanka Army (SLA) authorities have allowed fishing. Fellow fishermen rescued the victim who is now under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit in Jaffna Teaching Hospital, sources from Jaffna said.

The injured fisherman is Rasiah Chanthiran, 22, a resident of Kurunakar in Jaffna. He had obtained the necessary permission from SLA to fish in the seas where he got caught in the mine.

Sri Lanka armed forces had sown great amount of mines in the seas of Jaffna and the islets of Jaffna during war to prevent infiltration by Liberation Tigers into Jaffna peninsula, the sources added.
