SLA screens thousands of students

[TamilNet, Monday, 17 November 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Army launched a surprise search operation this afternoon around 2 p.m. to check more than twenty thousand school children in the Batticaloa town and its suburbs in Kottaimunai and Kallady.

Units of the Sri Lankan army set up temporary check points near schools to screen thousands of students as they began pouring out of schools at 2 p.m. the standard closing time in Sri Lanka.

The operation is unprecedented in the northeast.

This apparently was based on the army's suspicion that there are several LTTE informants in the senior grades of the schools in Batticaloa town. No details of any arrest were available.
