Sri Lankan Police harass Wickramabahu supporters in Jaffna

Chu地地aakam police arrested Manicakasothy Abimanasingham, the Jaffna District organizer of presidential candidate Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne and three of his supporters Thursday around 8:00 a.m in Chu地地aakam while distributing campaign pamphlets. Meanwhile, three other supporters of the candidate had been assaulted by police earlier, the sources added. Dr. Wickramabahu Karunartne condemned the police arrests and assault adding that it is a high handed act as election campaigning is permitted until Saturday.

The arrestees were produced at Mallaakam courts around 3:00 p.m by the police where they were released by the magistrate.

The three who were assaulted by the police were examined by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of Jaffna Teaching Hospital who issued a medical report.

Meanwhile, Mr. Manickasothy said the police had also confiscated 6,000 election campaign pamphlets and that action is being taken to get them back through the courts.
