[TamilNet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010, 10:06 GMT]
The main opposition parties United National Party (UNP), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Wednesday evening at a hurriedly convened press briefing announced that they have decided to request the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure freedom of movement and adequate security to the common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka.

SLMC leader Rauf Hakim told a news briefing Wednesday afternoon said the freedom of movement of General Fonseka currently hauled up in a hotel has been restricted.

General Fonseka is scheduled to attend an event at Elections Secretariat this evening where the final result of the presidential election is to be officially announced by the Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake.

Mr. Hakim further stated that the joint opposition is to issue a statement in regard to the conduct of the presidential election later.

Ranil Wickremesinghe and JVP leader Vijitha Heart also attended the press briefing.
