Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake declared Wednesday evening that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been elected sixth executive president in Tuesday’s presidential election. President Rajapaksa polled 6,015,934 (57.88 %) per cent of the vote against the 4,173,185 (40.15 %) secured by opposition common candidate Sarath Fonseka.

Mr..Dayananda Dissanayake said after announcing the results that he was a disappointed person as his directives were not adhered by the State media and some government department heads during the electioneering.

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake said a short while ago that he does not feel it is appropriate for him to continue to serve in the post after the conclusion of Tuesday’s presidential polls. Hence he was to retire soon from the post as early as possible.
