Floods render thousands homeless

17417 families were displaced due to floods from heavy rains which lashed many parts Sri Lanka since yesterday. Five people were killed in landslides and floods. One was struck dead by lightning.
Officials of the Department of Social Services said that dry rations are being sent to families displaced by floods and landslides in Ratnapura, Kegalle, Avissawela, Galle, Matara and Colombo.
Several highways were blocked due to overflowing rivers and torrents.
The Sri Lankan Parliament was adjourned early today around 2.30 p.m. when the access road to it was submerged by the swelling waters of the Diyawanna Oya.
The Parliament complex is situated in an island in the Diyawanna Oya lake near Colombo.
