UNP withdraws Freedom of Information Bill

[TamilNet, Friday, 24 September 2010, 03:54 GMT]
Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Thursday withdrew its private memberís Bill on the Freedom of Information due to the pressure brought by the ruling United Freedom Alliance (UPFA) that the government is in the process of drafting a similar legislation.

Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardena requested the UNP to withdraw the bill on the grounds that the government is in the process of drafting a similar legislation and the opposition could discuss that.

Sri Lanka is yet to have a Freedom of Information Act passed in the parliament.

In 2004 both major parties had endorsed a draft Act but it has not progressed.
