SLA moves into Periyamadhu

[TamilNet, Saturday, 08 May 1999, 11:57 GMT]
The SLA moved into the village of Periyamadhu, northeast of Mannar on the mainland, today said sources in Madhu this afternoon. Periyamadhu is on the interior road between Paalampiddy and Vidaththaltheevu.

The Mannar-Pooneryn-Jaffna highway is less than 10 kilometers west from Periyamadhu.

The interior road through Periyamadhu links up with the Mannar-Pooneryn-Jaffna highway at the Vidaththaltheevu junction.

The army had moved in large numbers from Madhu on Thursday towards the Periyamadhu area said sources in Mannar.

The Liberation Tigers claimed last month that that they had thwarted an attempt by the SLA to capture Periyamadhu.
