[TamilNet, Tuesday, 28 September 2010, 20:19 GMT]
Reopening Vasaavi値aan Maththiya Makaa Viththiyaalayam caught in Palaali High Security Zone (HSZ) of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) for the last twenty years is not immediately possible due to the danger of landmines in the school precincts, the school administration said. The school is functioning in a private property in Urumpiraay area since it was forced to displace in 1990 due to SLA offensives. The roof and the furniture of the school had been plundered during SLA occupation.

The above school was officially handed over to the school administration in an event held Tuesday with the participation of Jaffna SLA Commander Major Gen. Mahinda Kathurusinghe, Northern Province Governor, and former Jaffna SLA Commander, Major Gen. G. A. Chnadrasiri and Sri Lanka Minister Douglas Devananda.

Nearly 1200 students attend Vassaavi値aan school now functioning in a private property in makeshift huts without proper facilities.

Meanwhile, agricultural lands in Ariyaalai East in Jaffna Municipal Council area too were handed over Tuesday to the owners to begin cultivation, in an event attended by Major Gen. Mahinda Kathurusinghe, G. A. Chandrasiri and Douglas Devananda.
