A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was wounded when a bomb hidden in a sentry post near the patrol station in Chiththankerny in the Jaffna peninsula exploded around 9 a.m. this morning.

The army cordoned off the area and conducted a search operation after the incident.

Six persons, including the watchman of the petrol station were arrested by the SLA. They were released after interrogation, said sources.

The sentry post is manned only during the day time. The bomb exploded when the SLA soldiers arrived this morning for the duty.

Meanwhile two Sri Lanka Army soldiers were wounded when unidentified youths lobbed a grenade on a check post at the water tank road in Jaffna around 7.30 p.m. this evening.

The SLA retaliated by firing at random for nearly 10 minutes, wounding a 60 year old man identified as Savarimuthu Aloysius.

Many civilians were also assaulted by the army at Chundikkuli junction, Temple road junction and Milavu junction. The army conducted a search operation in the area.
