The EPRLF general secretary, Mr. Suresh Premachandran, led a procession in Vavuniya today that started from the Sinthamani Pillayar Kovil and ended at the Urban Council ground where a public meeting was held. The Sri Lankan army and police provided security for the procession and the public meeting was addressed by the EPRLF Vavuniya district secretary, Mr.N. Sivasakthi Ananthan.

Sources said that about seven thousand people representative of a wide cross section of society participated along with members of PLOTE and TELO.

The marchers called for an end to the war, the withdrawal of the residential and travel pass system and the provision of basic facilities for the displaced. The marchers also shouted slogans calling on the Tamil political and paramilitary groups to unite.

Representatives of the Democratic People's Liberation Front, allied to the PLOTE, the Vavuniya Traders Association, religious leaders and other EPRLF party leaders also addressed the rally.
