A fifty two year old woman was shot and seriously wounded by a Sri Lankan soldier last evening around 6.30 p.m. at Mirisuvil in the Thenmaradchi sector in Jaffna.
She was returning home from a field nearby with her cow that had gone there to graze during the day when she was shot at by a lone soldier from a SLA detachment in the area.
The woman, identified as Nagaratnam Maheswari, is now at the Intensive Care Unit of the Jaffna hospital.
Sources said that the soldier who had shot her had been harassing the woman's young daughter for her favours.
The woman had sent the girl away to Colombo when she had discovered the matter.
The soldier was angered by this, said the sources.
