The Chairman of the Vadamaradchi Pradeshiya Sabha (local government body), Mr. Chellaiah Sundramoorthy, has been sacked from the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) for violating the party's regulations, party sources said.
Mr. Douglas Devananda, the leader of the EPDP, has urged the Elections Commissioner's office in Jaffna to remove Sundramoorthy from the chairmanship and the membership of the Vadamaradchi PS.
Local government elections were held in the Jaffna peninsula in January last year.
Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has threatened to take legal action in the Sri Lankan courts if the government fails to announce dates for holding local government elections in the east of the island.
