Closed road hampers relief supplies

Sri Lankan Defence Ministry sources were quoted by state radio today saying that it was impossible to open the road from Mannar to Vidaththalthivu road due to heavy fighting there between Sri Lankan troops and the Liberation Tigers.
The closure was preventing the distribution of relief to many displaced people in the area, said aid workers in Mannar.
Senior military, government and ICRC officials are said to have met in Mannar to discuss the problem.
Defence sources said that the military would be willing to open new routes through Madhu Moondrumurippu or the Mannar-Oddusuddan road for NGO's and food supplies.
