Fishermen killed in SLN attack

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 21 July 1999, 18:12 GMT]
A fisherman was killed when the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) attacked his boat on Monday (July 19) night. Five others in the boat, however, managed to escape.

The six fishermen set out for fishing from the Ralkulai - Navaladi area on Monday night when they saw a gunboat coming towards them that started firing at them, said residents in the area.

All of the six fishermen attempted to jump into the sea but one of them, Selvarajah of Sampur, died in the attack, residents said.

The boat was severely damaged. Leaving the boat in sea, the fishermen swam to the shore.

Fishermen in Muttur now fear to go fishing as the Sri Lanka Navy has increased its patrols, said residents in the area.
