A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed and another wounded when suspected members of the Liberation Tigers threw a grenade at a route clearing patrol at Vantharumoolai, 23 km. north of Batticaloa, around 9 a.m. this morning.

The SLA soldiers opened fire at the attackers who had thrown the grenade from an old, unused building near the market.

Later, the soldiers assaulted civilians on the road, said witnesses. Five civilians were injured as a result, they said.

All transport on the Batticaloa-Valaichenai road came to standstill for nearly an hour, following the incident, they said.
