Policeman killed in Mannar

[TamilNet, Friday, 10 September 1999, 09:04 GMT]
A reserve Police constable was killed when the Liberation Tigers opened fire on the tractor in which he was travelling with a group of his colleagues this morning around 6.30 a.m. in Murunkan, south-west of Mannar.

The dead policeman was identified as R.D Siripala. His body was taken to the Mannar hospital later in the morning.

The Sri Lanka Army's Main Supply Route to Mannar is patrolled by the Special Task Force (STF) and military trained police units. The SLA was withdrawn from its positions in the south-western sectors of the road earlier this year, for redeployment in newly captured areas of the Vanni.
