SLA begins Rana Gosa V

Eighteen Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and 142 were wounded, 42 seriously, in fierce fighting with Liberation Tigers near Pallamadu, north of Mannar on the highway to Pooneryn today, SLA sources said.

More than 50 Liberation Tigers have been killed in the fighting, the SLA sources added.

Informed sources in Mannar said at least 30 SLA soldiers have been killed in the fighting.

Sri Lankan Security forces said that they began a new operation "Rana Gosa V" yesterday towards Pallamadu.

They said Sri Lankan airforce jets destroyed several LTTE bunkers when troops were trying to advance to Pallamadu.

Meanwhile, sources from Vavuniya said that the SLA began an operation from its position from Paranthan today.
