Police interrupt attack on refugees

Unidentified men armed with clubs and swords tried to attack the residents of Poonthoddam welfare centre about 4 km east of Vavuniya town last night, said sources.

The police on guard were alerted when they heard people screaming and had fired warning shots and chased the armed gang, they said.

Vavuniya Police who confirmed the incident said no one was hurt and added the security has been tightened at the centre.

Government officials say there are 9561 persons belonging to 2333 displaced families, in 8 Divisions of the welfare centre.
