Search operation in Nuwara Eliya

At least 50 Tamil youths have been arrested during a cordon and search operation by the Sri Lankan Police in the hill town of Nuwara Eliya, about 90 km. east of Colombo, this morning.

They have been taken to the police station for further questioning, sources said.

A police officer said the search operation has been launched as a pre-emptive measure following an increased number of blasts in the area recently.

Meanwhile a 12 year old school girl, Umaranjini Nadarasa, of Manipay in Jaffna, has been reported missing since Friday, October 1, her parents informed the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna.

According her parents, the girl who went to school on Friday had not returned home. She is a student of Hindu College.
