The Ministry of Defence has turned down an application from the opposition parliamentarian Dr.Jayalath Jayawardana, to visit the LTTE controlled parts of the Vanni region, said sources.

The UNP parliamentarian had earlier visited the Vanni, where he ran health clinics for refugees. The ruling party alleged that he had also met senior members of the Liberation Tigers during his visit there.

The Sri Lankan President charged that the UNP had hatched a conspiracy with the Liberation Tigers to topple the government, during his visit.

Dr. Jeyawardane said he is planning to take legal action for being refused permission to visit the area.
