[TamilNet, Monday, 11 October 1999, 11:23 GMT]
S. Ramamoorthy, former Member of Parliament for the Jaffna District, was arrested by the police this morning from his house at Negombo, along with another person, sources said. Police sources said they were arrested for illegal possession of firearms.

His brother, S. Rameswaran, who was also an MP for Jaffna, told TamilNet that his brother has sought permission from the Ministry of Defence to carry firearms for self defence purposes.

The brothers, S. Ramamoorthy and S. Rameswaran, were representing the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EDDP). They lost their membership after they were excluded from the EPDP.

The MP brothers were planning to start a new party.
