Police patrol ambushed

A Home guard was killed when the Liberation Tigers ambushed a police patrol at Kudapokkanai in the Polannaruwa district this morning, said sources.

A brief fire-fight followed the sources added.

Meanwhile a Sri Lanka Army soldier shot and killed two Sinhala villagers and wounded another in the Polannaruwa district last night police sources said.

The soldier, a deserter, had grabbed a riffle from another soldier at a sentry post, gone to the victims' residence and opened fire, the sources said.

Police said the motive for the killing is believed to be an unresolved personnel dispute.

The Moraweva Police who are conducting an investigation said the SLA soldier had absconded.
