Jaffna University student arrested

Selavanayagam Seventhiran, a student at the Arts Faculty of Jaffna University was arrested by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) yesterday said army sources. He was arrested on information given by another detainee, the sources added.

SLA sources said they recovered 3 grenades from his house.

The vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. P. Balasunderampillai has contacted SLA authorities regarding the arrest of the student.

Meanwhile two youths, Markkandu Krishanthan, 21 and Satkunam Rajenthiran,23, of Jaffna town have also been arrested by the SLA, said sources.

The youths have been arrested on suspicion regarding a grenade attack on a SLA sentry at Yaal Road in the northern town, the sources added.

Elsewhere in the peninsula, the SLA arrested Rasamani Pavananthan and Kantharasa Uthayasooriyan, both from Alaveddi East, on 23 October, their relatives complained to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna.
