[TamilNet, Wednesday, 27 October 1999, 10:00 GMT]
Sri Lankan Police shot and wounded a civilian in the Pesalai area in the Mannar district last night said sources. The Police said the man was trying to smuggle banned items into the areas held by the Liberation Tigers.

The Police arrested the man and he was admitted to the Mannar hospital for treatment they added.

The government has imposed restrictions on supply of essential goods to the Vanni region, which has resulted in shortage of these goods there.

Sources said many displaced persons in the Vanni are involved in this risky illegal trading to earn their living.

They travel through hazardous jungle routes to areas controlled by the government forces to buy goods and sell them in the Vanni the sources added.
