SLFP to contest Jaffna elections

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will contest the local government elections in Jaffna said party sources in Jaffna today.

The SLFP branch in Jaffna will meet tomorrow to decide on a list of candidates which, according to a party activist, will be sent to the political leadership in Colombo for approval.

Under the government's auspices, tha SLFP has been active in Jaffna since late last year, both directly and via its Sudhu Nelum movement with a view to gain a foothold in the Jaffna peninsula.

An SLFP organiser in Jaffna was shot dead in October.
