Civilians cross into Vanni

Sri Lankan government officials in Vavuniya said that 350 civilians who were stranded for over a month in Vavuniya after the closure of an access route to the Vanni areas held by the Liberation Tigers, were allowed to cross today.

They set off in buses from the Kachcherie this morning to Piramanaalankulam along Vavuniya -Mannar highway to the forward defence lines of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to be escorted by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) through the civilian safety zone at Periyathampanai to Periya Pandivirichchaan where the front lines of the LTTE are situated.
