Government doctors call off strike

[TamilNet, Saturday, 18 December 1999, 07:59 GMT]
The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has called off its six-day strike from noon today. Thousands of government doctors went on strike on 13 December, protesting at the Government's decision to bring medical services under the provincial health ministries.

The GMOA has said in a statement issued today that they have called off the strike consequent to several appeals made by religious dignitaries, several ministers, army and trade unions to withdraw its union action, in the nation's interests.

The GMOA said that all essential services in hospitals will return to normalcy from noon today.
