A member of a paramilitary group operating with the Sri Lanka Army was shot dead by unidentified armed men at Ninthavur in the south-eastern Ampara District, around 3.30 p.m. this evening said sources.

The Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) cadre, Tharmalingam Nimalathas,27, alias Nimalan, was shot dead while he was riding a motorcycle from the group's office at Karaithivu. He died on the spot, the sources added.

EPDP cadres from the Karaithivu office handed over his body to the Kalmunai hospital.

EDPD sources blamed the Liberation Tigers for the killing.

Meanwhile suspected members of the Liberation Tigers fired at policemen who were riding on two motorcycles in Eravur, about 15 km. north of Batticaloa, around 7.30 a.m. today. However, the policemen escaped unhurt, sources said.

Police sources said the attackers have taken away the motorcycles, left behind by the policemen.
