Elephants rampage through village

[TamilNet, Thursday, 11 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
A large herd of wild elephants wreaked havoc in the Ottisuddan area, destroying crops and farmers' huts, while trying to retrieve a baby elephant that had fallen into a well.

People fled the village of Puliyankulam Alakarai in the Ottisuddan area as the herd of angry elephants went on a rampage after the baby had slipped into an unprotected well.

It is not known whether the baby was retrieved by the herd eventually as people in the area are yet scared to return to the village.

Meanwhile a one and a half year old infant was killed when a wall of a house which had got heavily soaked by the continuing rains collapsed on the child yesterday in the Aruna housing scheme in Muththaiyyan Kaddu, in the district of Mullaithivu.
