[TamilNet, Friday, 25 February 2000, 10:30 GMT]
A Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) officer was killed and two others were seriously wounded in a counter ambush by the Liberation Tigers at Salli, north of Trincomalee, around 10.45 p.m. Thursday night, naval sources said.

Salli is a fishing hamlet in the Sambaltivu area, about 5 km. north of Trincomalee town on the Uppuveli-Kuchchaveli road.

Liberation Tigers attacked a naval ambush unit and wounded three. One of them, an officer, succumbed to his injuries at the SLN hospital, the sources said.

Sri Lanka Army and Navy conducted a combined search operation in Sambaltivu and Salli areas.

Residents complained that some civilians were assaulted during the search operation. It was not known if any arrests were made.
