Five soldiers were wounded when the Liberation Tigers shelled the Punaanai Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp, 47 km. north of Batticaloa, around 7.45 a.m. this morning said sources.

Unconfirmed reports said 8 soldiers were wounded in the shelling.

The troops retaliated by firing shells towards the LTTE held areas in the western hinterlands of the Batticaloa District. Shells were also fired from the Kalkudha Sri Lanka Army camp, 3 km. east of Valaichenai.

All transport on the Batticaloa-Colombo high way were disrupted for nearly an hour due to the incident, the sources said.

In a separate incident, two soldiers were wounded when the Liberation Tigers attacked a SLA check-post at Sigiriya in Konagala in the south-eastern Ampara District around 2 p.m. this afternoon, defence sources said.
