[TamilNet, Saturday, 13 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
There are more than two thousand seven hundred primary school teachers in the northeastern province who have not received any type of training said officials of the Provincial Council Ministry of Education in Trincomalee.

The Northeastern Provincial officials revealed that these teachers had not even undergone the one week basic training which is compulsory before they can take up duties.

There are 7133 primary school teachers in the northeastern province. They also said that of the 747 English language teachers in the province 501 are untrained.

Most of these teachers were educated in the Tamil medium and have only credit passes at the GCE (O.L) examination.

The quality of English education in the majority of schools in the northeastern province has dropped drastically as a consequence say NEPC education ministry officials.
